A knitting group based at Rhymney Library has spent the past year supporting the children most in need across Europe.

The ‘Knit and Natter’ group was formed in February 2024 and is now working with charity Teams4U, as part of their shoebox project to send handcrafted items to children in countries such as Ukraine and Romania.

The group meet every Tuesday at the library from 11am until 1pm, where new skills are learnt, as well as it being a good chance to build relationships and chat with others in the area.

This Christmas, Knit and Natter are creating shoe boxes for children across eastern Europe, which will be distributed by Teams4U.

“It really means a lot”: Ukrainians thank Caerphilly community for support

Councillor Carol Andrews, cabinet member for education and communities, praised the group’s community spirit, stating: “The Knit and Natter group at Rhymney Library Hub is a shining example of the difference that can be made when communities come together.

“Through their hard work and dedication, they are not only lifting spirits locally but also making a real difference to children in need this Christmas. It’s inspiring to see residents supporting each other, improving their wellbeing, and creating a brighter future for others.”
