After last week’s Storm Bert disruption, football returned across Caerphilly County Borough ahead of a packed festive period.
Starting with some cup action on Friday night, Caerphilly Athletic hosted Porthcawl in round four of the South Wales FA Senior Cup.
The home side made light work of their opposition, winning 5-0 thanks to a Will Toms brace, and further goals from Joey Morelli, Iwan John, and Dafydd Pearce.
Moving into Saturday and Cymru South leaders Trethomas Bluebirds extended their gap at the top with a bounce-back win over Cwmbran Celtic.
The Bluebirds fell a goal behind to an early penalty but responded well, eventually running-out 6-4 winners thanks to a hat-trick from Callum Huggins, two from Gareth Tedstone, and another from Leon Thomas.
One division lower and Treowen Stars continue their charge to join Trethomas in the second tier with a 4-0 win over Newport Corinthians.
Goals from Kyle Williams, Tommy James, Nathan Gulley, and Christopher Colvin means the Stars open a five point gap at the top with a game in hand.
Risca United were also in action and picked-up a much needed win at home to Croesyceiliog.
Two from Callum Hutton and further goals from Lloyd Oliver, Finley Skiverton, and Alfie Hutton were enough on the day. The Cuckoos currently sit in 12th, but have as many as five games in hand over some sides in the division.
There were some bad results in the Gwent Premier League as Cefn Fforest lost 4-0 to Monmouth Town, and Wattsville extended their poor run of form with a 5-0 loss to Clydach Wasps.
Just the one side featured in the South Wales Premier League; Cwrt Rawlin travelled to Treorchy but despite taking a 1-0 lead through Jack Harvey, lost 2-1 and sit in sixth.
More Senior Cup action as clubs looked to join Caerphilly in the next round, starting with Nelson Cavaliers who were taken to penalties by Llangeinor.
Goals from Ben Lintern and Liam Dellanna in regular time weren’t enough to win outright, but the hosts got it done in the end, prevailing 4-2 on penalties.
There was no such luck for Bargoed, who were edged-out 4-3 by Cardiff Airport on the road. Goals from Dylan Thomas, Dylan King, and Wilson Makia were not enough on the day.
Elsewhere and Aber Valley were comfortably beaten 6-3 away from home to Porthcawl Town Athletic, despite having a 2-1 lead after 25 minutes.
Meanwhile, it was round two of the Gwent County Amateur cup for some, with AFC Pontymister cruising through thanks to a 5-1 win over Mill Street Dynamo.
Two from Warren Derraven, and goals from Mark Mears, Anthony Twine, and Jaydn Howell Jones, sees them into the hat.
It was a slightly more stressful afternoon for Argoed Reform Club however, who edged past Ashvale 4-3, largely thanks to a Macauley Price hat-trick.
Evan Bowden grabbed the other, and Argoed squeeze through to the next round.
But there was no such luck for Trinant, who bow out after a 1-0 loss to Alway.
Fleur De Lys meanwhile enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 win over Llanhilleth Athletic, goals from Thomas Calver, Joshua Rees, and Dylan Morgan made sure of the result.
One side who seem to make themselves known each week is Aberbargoed Buds, who thumped Tintern Abbey 8-0 to cruise through.
There were goals all over as Elliot Williams, Ross Fowler, and Joseph Horne all picked-up a brace. Other goals came from Gruffydd Bray and Nathan Rich.
Finally, Risca Town who were taken to penalties against Mardy after a 2-2 draw in normal time. Ben Morgan and Kean Davies were on the scoresheet during the match, before Risca narrowly claimed victory from the spot with a 3-2 shootout win.
Back to league action in the North Gwent Football League and Blackwood Town were on the wrong end of a 7-0 scoreline against fellow borough side Maesycwmmer.
It was a day to remember for the hosts, and for Jorge Rees who scored three from the bench. Reiss Lamorte, Ellis Patterson, and Kian Rees chipped-in with the rest.
Newbridge Town closed the gap on table-topping Fleur De Lys to four points with a game in hand after their 6-0 victory over Garnlydan.
A hat-trick from Kristian Sheppard and a brace from Liam Hickman made it an easy afternoon. Jayce Hadigate scored the other.
Twyn-y-Ffald Blues were the other borough side in action. The Blackwood-based club beat Fields Park Athletic 4-2 thanks to goals from Thomas Price, James Hook, Matthew Harman, and Leon Leonard to move up into seventh.
Down in the Newport and District Football League, Bedwas were involved in an 11-goal thriller against Graig Villa Dino Reserves, but ultimately lost 6-5.
Gutting for the likes of Luke Bevan and James Jenkins, who both claimed a brace. Bedwas sit in fifth.
Finally to the TERV league where we finish on a high as Cascade took three points with a 5-0 victory over Church Village.
Samuel Hann-Jones, Adam Roberts, Aaron Davies, and Calum Duncan with the goals. Cascade sit third after just six games played.
Moving to Sunday and Cascade Ladies claimed an excellent 2-1 win over Pontypridd United Women. An Ellis Lunn brace gives them their second win of the league season.
