Pupils decorated and sold baubles to raise money

Inspired by the theme of Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol, younger pupils at Ty Gilfach started a mini-enterprise to raise money for The Rhymney Valley Foodbank.

Pupils wanted to help others in their community at Christmas time.

Supported by their staff Jackie Evans, Stephanie McCarthy and Lisa Jones, pupils have decorated and sold Christmas baubles to raise money for the Trussell Trust.

One of the pupils decided on the name Handz (made by hand, given by hand).

Rhys Evans, head of provision at Ty Gilfach, said he had been impressed with the pupils’ enterprise, which covered many subject areas to support learning.

The project is set to continue into the new year with pupils already thinking about ‘Fabergé Eggs’ for Easter.

Ms Evans said: “We started selling the baubles this week, and next week we’ll go into Tesco to buy dry goods for the food bank.

“The spirit of Christmas is about giving, and with a Christmas Carol it’s about never being too late to change.”

Nearly 120 knitted blankets donated to those in need this Christmas thanks to volunteer efforts
