Hendre Junior School

Proposals to merge two schools in Caerphilly and create a new primary have moved a step closer.

The town’s Hendre Infants School and Hendre Junior School could amalgamate in September 2025, according to those plans.

A recent consultation period found 176 of the schools’ 195 older pupils supported the merger, which other respondents said could benefit children moving to Key Stage 2.

The two schools, on opposite sides of St Cenydd Road, would continue to operate on their existing sites if the plans go ahead.

At a Caerphilly County Borough Council cabinet meeting, members noted the consultation responses and agreed to move to the next stage of the lengthy amalgamation process.

The council will next issue a statutory notice, offering another chance for partners to have their say on the plans.

At the meeting, Cllr Sean Morgan, who leads the local authority, said there was “obviously… a willingness to amalgamate” among members of the schools’ communities.
