The transformation of Newport’s western outskirts looks likely to continue, with the planned construction of two “major” industrial units.
The proposals follow approved plans for new data centres and the construction of semiconductor plants in the Celtic Lakes area.
Newport City Council’s planning committee met on Wednesday to hear proposals for the new units, which could be built north of the former Quinn Radiators factory site.
Members granted planning permission for the project, paving the way for applicant G Property Holdings Ltd to create more than 1,000 square metres of floorspace.
The units will be available for light and general industrial purposes, as well as storage and distribution, plans show.
At the committee meeting, planning officer Grant Hawkins said the project would be “compatible in scale and design” with the surrounding units in Celtic Lakes.
A nearby woodland area will not be affected by the development, he said, adding that the developer had also agreed to include an “informal crossing point” for pedestrians, following negotiations with the council.
A design statement for the proposals suggest the units, once built, will be available for lease by prospective tenants.
Members of the planning committee voted unanimously in favour of granting permission for the development.
