Trethomas Bluebirds claimed a big point away to title favourites Llanelli Town

It was a busy weekend of football across Caerphilly County Borough as most clubs enter their final stages of the season.

Kicking things off on Friday night were Cymru South title contenders Trethomas Bluebirds, who made the trip west to face promotion favourites Llanelli Town.

Only goal difference separated the two sides heading into the hotly anticipated match, as more than 500 fans descended on Stebonheath Park.

It was the hosts who opened the scoring thanks to a Sean Cronin header from a corner, but the Bluebirds responded well and won a penalty thanks to Ethan Edwards’ sharp turn in the box.

Top scorer for the club Gareth Tedstone stepped-up and dispatched the spot kick to bring his side level, which is how the game finished. A point means Llanelli stay top with a superior goal difference.

Saturday and Treowen Stars are still looking good to join Trethomas in the second tier of Welsh football as they extended the gap at the top of the Ardal South East to three points with a game in hand following a 4-1 win over Tredegar Town.

Christopher Hartland netted his 14th of the season, while Corey Jenkins, Carter Campbell and Kyle Williams all chipped-in too.

At the other end of the table and Risca United had an afternoon to forget when they lost 3-0 at home to Newport Corinthians.

The Cuckoos sit in a very precarious position just one point outside the relegation zone. They do however have a few games in hand over rivals around them.

Moving onto the Gwent Premier Division and there was an all-Caerphilly clash between Wattsville and Cefn Fforest, with both sides desperate for points near the foot of the table.

It was the visitors who took a 2-0 lead thanks to Kieran Vaughan and Ewan Walkley, but Wattsville battled back through Ricky Amos and Kelan McColl before Rhys John scored a 93rd minute winner for the hosts.

In the First Division, AFC Pontymister were involved in a back-and-forth contest with PILCS FC, with the hosts missing out in a 3-2 loss.

Anthony Twine and McCauley Johnston with the goals for Pontymister, but two red cards meant they couldn’t keep the visitors out, who scored a 98th minute winner to snatch all three points.

Rhymney managed to claim a point away to Mardy thanks to goals from Travis Greening and Rhys Evans. That’s only their 11th point of the season but they sit three clear of the relegation zone.

Aber Valley were in action in the South Wales Premier League for only the eighth time this season, but made it count with a 2-0 win over Tonyrefail to move-up into seventh. John Edwards and Scott Armitage with the finishes.

There was Hugh James Cup action for some borough sides, but no good news as both Caerphilly Athletic and Nelson Cavaliers both exited the competition.

Caerphilly got the closest after taking Radyr Rangers to pens but lost 3-0 from the spot, while Nelson were beaten handily 4-0 away to Dinas Powys.

An all-borough affair in the North Gwent Football League as Blackwood’s Twyn-y-Ffald Blues took on Argoed Reform Club.

It was the visitors who claimed the bragging rights on the day, winning 4-1 thanks to two from Liam Bennington and a brace from Jordan Price.

Elsewhere and Newbridge Town were involved in an eight-goal thriller on the road to Garnlydan.

The visitors were 4-2 down at the break despite taking a 2-0 lead through Daniel Creese and Beau Dugmore, but needed Kristian Sheppard and Lewis Watkins to rescue a point. 4-4 it ended.

Maesycwmmer were the other side in action, unfortunately edged-out 2-1 by Rassau and sit three from bottom.

Just Bedwas in action down in the Newport and District Football League; they lost 4-2 to Graig Villa Dino Reserves despite Ryan Jones’ best efforts with a brace.

Down in the TERV Premier Division and Cascade would have been frustrated to lose 3-0 at home to Rhydyfelin, while Bargoed and Gilfach both had to settle for a point.

It was Gilfach who took a commanding 2-0 lead thanks to Matthew Ganderton and Liam Phillips, but couldn’t hold on as Cameron Thomas and Gregory Frankenburg made it 2-2 at full-time.

Masons Arms were the only side playing in Division One, but maybe wished they hadn’t as they were thumped 5-0 by Llantwit Fardre Reserves.
