Risca Banking Hub is now open
Risca Banking Hub is now open

Last May, the Barclays branch in Risca closed down – leaving the town without a bank.

Now, nine months later, a new banking hub has opened in its place.

Located on 52 Tredegar Street, the hub will serve customers of a variety of major banks. These are NatWest, Halifax, Santander, Lloyds, HSBC, and Barclays.

What is a banking hub?

Banking hubs are a shared banking space, similar to a traditional bank branch, but available to everyone. The hub will consist of a counter service operated by Post Office employees, where customers of any bank can withdraw and deposit cash, make bill payments and carry out regular banking transactions.

There will also be private spaces where customers can speak to staff from their own bank for more complicated matters on set days.

The hub, which opened earlier this month, is the first of its kind in Caerphilly County Borough, and gives people a physical place to do their banking.

Open between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Friday, the hub is run by the Post Office, and delivered by Cash Access UK – which is a not-for-profit organisation funded by major banks to provide community banking services.

Stacey Thomas, senior development manager at Cash Access UK, said: “I’m so happy that the banking hub in Risca is now open. Finding the right location has been a challenge but well worth it.

“As a team, we have a huge local connection to Risca. Family members of the team work nearby and my mother-in-law used to work in Barclays before she retired.”

Ms Thomas continued: “I’m so proud the hub is now open giving local people renewed access to cash and in-person banking services.

“The hub is available for everyday banking transactions every day of the week, and for more specific or complex enquiries, a community banker will be on-site to assist on designated days.”
