Two new rugby league teams launched as training begins

Two new rugby league sides have started-up in Caerphilly County Borough, with players training together for the first time on St David’s Day.

The Ystrad Mynach-based South Wales Jets launched their new Under-14s girls’ side, with 30 players taking part in their first training session.

Meanwhile, Aber Valley Wolves’ new wheelchair squad trained together for the first time at Caerphilly Leisure Centre.

Attending the Jets’ training session were Wales internationals Amberley Ruck and Ffion Jenkins.

Jenkins said: “It was a really good day, and to have a turnout of over 30 girls was incredible.

“To see the growth of the game in Wales and to see these girls enjoying rugby league, and to give them the opportunity and pathway to pursue rugby league, is amazing.”

Elsewhere, 11 players took part in the Wolves training session, led by coaches Paul Sargent and Matthew Morris-Parker, who have joined the club from Cardiff Blue Dragons and Torfaen Tigers respectively.

Players from both the Blue Dragons and the Tigers joined in to help the session, which was hailed a success by the club.

Morris-Parker said: “It’s great to see so many people come here, new and old. It’s always great at these sort of events to bring the community together and introduce people to the sport as well.

“We’re an inclusive sport, anyone can play, disabled or non-disabled and we’d love more people in Caerphilly to give it a go.

“If you love rugby and either you can’t play running rugby or want to try a new version, please come along.”
