Treowen Stars have moved one step closer to becoming Ardal South East champions despite a goalless draw at home to Chepstow Town.
The pair met at Bush Park on Saturday April 5 having played each other in a thrilling 3-2 match which led to victory for the Stars only a couple of weeks ago.
It wasn’t quite as entertaining as that one, but it was still a valuable point for Treowen, who edge closer to the converted top spot.
Kick-off
A change of ends meant the Stars were into the blazing sun to start the first-half, and not helped with a lot of ball in the air early on.
The pair had quite contrasting styles out of possession with Chepstow happy to let Treowen pass the ball around at the back, while the hosts were aggressive in the press – which worked better on such a bobbly pitch.
Although the Stars were just about on top, it was Chepstow who had the first half chance when Finnan Maguire-Hamblett’s effort was pulled wide of the near post.
The real threat from the visitors was Joshua Parsons however. The midfielder floated around the 10 position and was both tricky to tackle and had good vision on the ball.
In a fairly quiet opening 20 minutes or so, the game almost opened up when Chepstow’s Adam Wakley forced a wonder save from Jonathan Green.
From a corner, Wakley’s header looked to be going in bar the outstretched glove of Green. There were cries that the ball had crossed the line, but it was hooked away and the Stars survived.
It took that close shave to see a bit of ‘football’ from the hosts, who played a lovely little combination move through the centre involving six or seven players. It didn’t lead to anything, but was promising nonetheless.
There were a few chances for the league leaders to close the half however, starting with a corner which bounced around and came to Craig McDonell. Leaning back though, his shot was always rising.
The best effort for the Stars came from captain Christian Davies on the edge of the box. It was a vicious strike which almost caught the keeper out, but Matthew Swann just managed to tip the ball over the bar.
Second-half
It was great to see an especially full Bush Park in the sunshine, as the club invited back past players to enjoy the top-of-the-table clash.
There were no goals to show them so far however, and with Tommy James defending so well for the hosts, it looked unlikely that first would go to Chepstow.
A free-kick to Treowen provided the first half chance. Swann came to gather but missed and let sub Macsen Evans get a head to it first. He couldn’t direct it though and the ball was cleared.
A few minutes later and a good ball from the left saw Carter Campbell jump highest. He did manage to get his head to it, but there wasn’t enough of a connection to keep it under the bar.
The game continued to be really scrappy, far from the crazy 3-2 win for the Stars over Chepstow just two weekends ago.
With the match drawing to a close, there was one last opportunity for Treowen to get a huge three points when Corey Jenkins’ flicked header was directed goal bound, but just deflected wide for another corner.
Nothing came of it, and soon the referee blew the full-time whistle on a quiet game, but it was a solid point for the league leaders.
Treowen are now 12 points clear of Chepstow Town in second, but have played two more games.
