Nant yr Aber river to be monitored over pollution fears following fire

The Nant yr Aber river in Caerphilly is be monitored over the coming days after foam used to extinguish an industrial fire entered it.

Crews were called to Magnera Composite Fibres on Pontygwindy Industrial Estate just after 10am on Monday April 7 after reports of a fire at the factory.

Pictures of white foam in the river have been circulating on social media since – as well as in the river Rhymney, which Nant yr Aber feeds into.

In a statement, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “At approximately 10.07am, crews from Caerphilly were mobilised to Magnera Composite Fibres on Pontygwindy Industrial Estate, Caerphilly to reports of a fire within onsite machinery.

Crews effectively dealt with the fire and have put pollution prevention measures in place to prevent further pollution within the local water source.

“SWFRS have liaised with Welsh Water and Natural Resources Wales on scene and can confirm foam has entered the Nant yr Aber.

“Sampling has taken place and monitoring will continue in the coming days to establish the impact on the local water courses.”
