Lewis Girls School, in Ystrad Mynach
The FAW recently visited Lewis Girls School to launch the application

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is hoping to engage more girls in football as it looks to recruit 30 secondary schools to take part in its ‘BE. Football Schools’ programme.

The scheme provides training for teachers to help engage girls with football, helping identify and develop life skills and support girls to lead football-related activity for others.

Each school will be tasked to identify six Key Stage 3 girls (aged 11 to 14) to engage in the programme by becoming BE. Football influencers.

There are now 102 BE. Football schools in Wales, with a focus on developing female leaders for the future, according to the FAW.

Applications to become a BE. Football school are now open! ✨

We recently took the UEFA Women's EURO 2025 trophy along to Lewis Girls' School to find out more about the impact of the programme within their school 🫶

Aims of the project include:

  • Improve the PE experience for girls through teachers adopting a life skills approach to PE (making it relevant) through football.
  • Building confidence in female PE teachers to deliver football on the curriculum and extra-curriculum activities.
  • Increase the number of girls enjoying football related activities and being active.
  • Develop girls in leadership roles to deliver relevant and enjoyable roles for more girls in their schools.
  • Provide appropriate formats of football in a way that suits the female teenage audience.

Secondary schools in Wales can register for the BE. Football Schools programme by completing the application form via the link.
