Hudson Greenway won his Welsh vest over the weekend

A 13-year-old boxer who is the great-nephew of Caerphilly boxing legend Don Braithwaite is set to represent Wales, despite only taking up the sport a year ago.

Mother Lisa Greenway “couldn’t be more proud” of son Hudson, who first visited Pantside ABC boxing gym in Newbridge “overweight and low on confidence”.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer, she said: “He started boxing about a year ago mainly to lose a bit of weight and get active.

“He’s been training with former world champion Gavin Rees and he’s come on loads. He’s lost a third of his body weight and is a lot happier in himself.”

The commitment has led to success in the ring, with Greenway picking up a Welsh vest after a unanimous victory in Cardiff on Sunday (May 18).

“I’ve been beaming ever since. I feel like such a proud mum. Not to say I didn’t have faith, but to see him win was an amazing feeling.”

The good news keeps coming for the Lewis School Pengam pupil, who received a letter shortly after his fight saying he’s been chosen to represent Wales.

“It came at a complete shock to me and even his coach. We’re so pleased for him and I know the school and council have been celebrating his success too.

“He’s training with them this week and has another fight soon.”
