The pantry in Rhymney was opened to the public on Monday June 9

A new community pantry has officially launched at St David’s Community Centre in Rhymney, providing local residents with access to affordable food and a welcoming community space.

Following a soft opening to members earlier this month, the launch event took place on Monday June 9 with invited guests, including local councillors. Refreshments were provided by volunteers from the Parent Network.

Part of a wider network of local pantries, the Rhymney Pantry is designed to look and feel like a shop. Members pay a small weekly fee and can choose at least ten food items, including fresh fruit and vegetables.

The project has been funded through the Shared Prosperity Fund via the Food4Growth Sustainable Food Network, along with Direct Food Support from the Welsh Government.

Cllr Carol Andrews, cabinet member for education and communities, said: “The Rhymney Pantry is a fantastic example of how our communities can come together to create something truly meaningful.

“It’s not just about helping people access affordable food – it’s about giving them choice, dignity and the chance to be part of something positive.

“I’m proud to see this kind of support being delivered here in Rhymney.”
