Aaron Ramsey has been officially unveiled as a Cardiff City player
Aaron Ramsey rejoined Cardiff City ahead of the 2023/24 season

Wales captain Aaron Ramsey will leave Cardiff City this summer, two years after rejoining his boyhood club – with a move to Mexico heavily rumoured.

Ramsey, who is from Caerphilly, came up through the Bluebirds’ academy before leaving the club to join Arsenal in 2008, at the age of 17.

After 11 years in North London, the midfielder would go on to have spells at Juventus, Rangers, and Nice before moving back to the Welsh capital in 2023. However, his return coincided with a difficult period for the club.

After manager Erol Bulut was sacked early in the 2024/25 season, his assistant Omer Riza stepped in to replace him. But with relegation from the Championship staring the club in the face, Riza was sacked with three games remaining – and Ramsey was thrust into the dugout on a caretaker basis.

However, he was unable to save Cardiff from the drop, and now the club prepares for life in League One – the third tier of English football.

Ramsey, a former pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, was among the frontrunners to become City’s new permanent manager, but that now that appears unlikely with the club confirming his departure.

The 34-year-old will officially leave the club as a free agent on June 30, when his contract expires.

He has been linked with a move to Mexico City-based outfit Pumas UNAM, who play in the top flight of Mexican football.

Also leaving the Bluebirds this summer will be 23-year-old Kieron Evans, from Brithdir.

Evans, who spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Newport County in League Two, will also depart for free as his contract comes to an end.

Jamilu Collins, Raheem Conte, Anwar El Ghazi, Dimitrios Goutas, and Yakou Meite will also be released by the club this summer.
