The new £1 million all-weather 3G sports pitch has finally opened at Risca Leisure Centre.

Work on the new pitch began in January – and has been funded by the Welsh Government’s Community Focused Schools capital grant programme.

The site will be used by pupils at the nearby Risca Comprehensive during school hours, but will serve the wider community during the evenings and weekends.

The floodlit pitch, which has replaced the previous AstroTurf, has an artificial surface designed to withstand high usage throughout the year.

However, Risca Hockey Club have previously criticised the plans, because the new surface would be unsuitable for hockey – which forced the club to move.

The new all-weather pitch however will be suitable for both football and rugby.

Council abandons plans to close two leisure centres following angry backlash

Councillor Chris Morgan, Caerphilly Council’s cabinet member for leisure, said: “This development reflects our commitment to providing high-quality, accessible facilities that support both education and lifelong participation in sport.

“The 3G pitch enhances our ability to deliver the aims of the Sport and Active Recreation Strategy, ensuring that more people can enjoy the benefits of physical activity close to home.”

Councillor Carol Andrews, cabinet member for education and communities, described the new pitch as “an excellent example of how we can maximise the use of school sites for the benefit of both learners and the wider community”.
