Pontllanfraith Inner Wheel has raised almost £4,400 for good causes over the past year – supporting charities at local, national and international level.

The club, which currently has 24 members, collected a total of £4,392 during the Inner Wheel year to June 2025, with donations made to causes worth a combined £4,580.

Beneficiaries included a wide range of organisations such as the Ukraine Fuel Appeal, Hospice of the Valleys, Rhymney Valley Food Bank, Velindre Fundraising, the Poppy Appeal, Blackwood Little Theatre, First Cefn Fforest Scouts, and the Air Ambulance.

It has also contributed to local Rotary clubs’ ‘Stop the Bleed’ campaign, which is providing first aid training to comprehensive schools across Caerphilly County Borough.

Internationally, Pontllanfraith Inner Wheel has supported Mary’s Meals, which provides food and education to children in some of the world’s poorest communities, and the Purple Community Fund, which helps families in the Philippines move out of rubbish dump settlements by making and selling items from recycled materials.

Funds were raised through monthly coffee mornings, shopping evenings, raffles, and an annual Christmas fundraiser at Tesco, alongside other activities.

Founded in 1986, Pontllanfraith Inner Wheel will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year. The club meets on the first Tuesday evening of each month from September to July at The Three Horseshoes in Pentwynmawr, where members enjoy a meal, socialising, and talks from guest speakers.

Originally formed as an organisation for the wives and daughters of Rotarians, Inner Wheel is now open to women of all ages and backgrounds.

Member Sonia Stevens said: “Furs, hats, and pearls, are not required.”

Pontllanfraith Inner Wheel is part of District 15 of the global Inner Wheel organisation, which has clubs in 100 countries.

Later this year, members will be supporting the worldwide UN campaign “Orange the World” to raise awareness of gender-based violence.

New members are always welcome, to find out more, please contact the club’s membership officer Diane Lloyd on 07971 684882.
