The owners of a café in Rogerstone have resubmitted plans for a new outdoor seating area.

Applicant Alec Holdaway is seeking planning permission for a new pergola in front of The Glade Café in Rogerstone Welfare Ground.

The timber structure would house eight picnic-style tables for the cafe’s customers, according to plans lodged with Newport City Council.

The proposal is a second attempt to gain permission for the works, after planning officers rejected an initial bid in May, citing parking concerns.

At the time, the council planners said the Welfare Ground is “used for a variety of sporting and community uses, including the cafe, which generate parking demand”.

They said the application included “insufficient information” on how the wider site could meet that demand, given their assessment that the development would lead to the loss of five parking spaces.

The new application includes data from two parking surveys, carried out in July when football and cricket fixtures were both due to be played at the grounds.

It highlights three parking areas within the wider site, as well as spaces at the community centre and overflow parking areas near a football pitch.

The application is out for consultation until Tuesday August 26, and can be viewed on the Newport City Council website under reference 25/0606.
