A new care home in Newport could create up to 60 jobs.

The city council has received plans for a 66-bedroom care home for older people on part of the former Whiteheads steelworks site, which is being redeveloped.

The applicant, LNT Care Developments Ltd, plans for the proposed three-storey building to become “a local community care facility, the residents of which are expected to emanate from an area no more than three miles from the site but generally closer”.

The “majority” of the 50 to 60 jobs created at the completed home “are expected to be offered to suitable candidates from the same local area”, the firm said in its submissions to the council.

Outline planning permission for the redevelopment of the Whiteheads was granted in 2017, and wider works there have been under way for several years.

Newport HMO plan rejected over parking and bedroom size concerns

The project also includes 528 new homes and a primary school.

LNT Care Developments said its proposals will offer “those in need of care an improved quality and choice of accommodation to that which exists within the local area at present”.

Planning documents show the care home would be located near the northeastern corner of the project site, off Mendalgief Road and near the junction with Cardiff Road.

The application is out for public consultation until Friday September 5, and can be viewed on the Newport City Council website under reference 25/0375.
