Public toilets and new basketball courts among plans for city park

Public toilets could be reopened in Beachwood Park

Public toilets in Newport’s Beechwood Park could be reopened for future summers, the city council’s leader said.

A trial opening was held at the park between July and September this year.

Cllr Dimitri Batrouni pledged to explore the reopening of public toilets as part of this year’s budget commitments, based on issues residents would like to see tackled.

Opposition councillors have also called for more public toilets to be made available across the city.

Conservative councillor Ray Mogford, who represents Bishton and Langstone, has twice called for a “meaningful update” on the £15,000 budget commitment to “public toilet considerations” this year.

In response, Cllr Batrouni said the whole sum was spent on the summer trial at Beechwood Park, and “a full review of the arrangements and costs will take place”.

No decision yet on public toilet reopening after summer trial

“The aim is to extend seasonal opening from May 1 to September 30 in future years and consider provision during busy winter periods,” he added.

Meanwhile, Beechwood Park will also benefit from an £80,000 investment in new courts for basketball and netball.

The council announced this week they would be developed on two “old and disused” former tennis courts.

A public consultation was launched last summer, seeking residents’ views on ways to improve that area of the park.

Newport leading the way on several climate targets

“This is fantastic news for the park and the city,” said Cllr Mark Spencer, the cabinet member for communities and sport. “We are committed to increasing the sporting opportunities across Newport and we want these to be as diverse and inclusive as possible.”

The council will provide 10% of the project’s funding, with the remainder coming from Sport Wales and the Welsh Government.
