A family-run dairy farm in Gelligaer has been recognised for the quality of its herd after it was awarded ‘pedigree’ status.

Price and Co Farming, based at Gelliargwellt Uchaf Farm, milks around 750 Holstein Friesian cows every day. The new recognition, from dairy breed society Holstein UK, means the entire herd is now registered as fully pedigree – marking a major milestone in more than a century of farming by the Price family.

The family has farmed at Gelliargwellt Uchaf since 1906 and while the herd had already been registered with Holstein UK, achieving full pedigree status confirms the herd’s strong genetic line.

Farm co-owner and director Paul Price said: “Demand for dairy products, especially high-quality milk, is very strong. Achieving pedigree status shows our commitment to excellence in every aspect of animal husbandry – right from conception.

“Winning the Merit Trophy for Farmers as Outstanding Dairy Entrepreneurs at last year’s Glamorgan Farmers Show gave us the final nudge to go for pedigree status.”

Under the new designation, all future calves will carry the Gelliargwellt pedigree name, helping preserve the farm’s reputation for quality and heritage for future generations.

Price & Co forms part of the wider Bryn Group, which also runs an anaerobic digestion plant at the farm and an aggregates business from its quarry.

The anaerobic digestion plant processes cattle slurry and locally collected food waste to produce renewable electricity and nutrient-rich biofertiliser, which is then used to grow silage crops for the herd.
