Caerphilly Council could build 50 new properties across three parcels of land in Bargoed.

The sites are currently classed as “informal grassland” within the Park Estate and could be transformed with a mixture of apartments, houses and bungalows.

The local authority’s Caerphilly Homes organisation is leading on the project, which includes bungalows to “increase the supply of accessible housing” within the council’s social housing stock.

The new homes will be of a “contemporary” design “consistent” across the three sites, located near Heol Coedcae, Heol Pencarreg, and Western Drive.

At a meeting of the council’s planning committee, on Wednesday November 12, case officer Elizabeth Rowley said the application had drawn five objections, but “many are not material planning considerations”.

A council report shows those objections focused on a loss of parking provision, concerns about noise and traffic during the construction period, and antisocial behaviour.

The council also weighed up the potential loss of open spaces, but said the areas of land comprising the development site were “currently considered to be underused” and offered “limited functionality for residents”.

The development would include green “enhancements” to create “higher quality open spaces”, according to the report – which also noted Bargoed Park was nearby.

“I’m sure Bargoed will welcome a development of this kind – particularly as it’s affordable housing,” said planning committee chairman, Cllr Roy Saralis.

Members of the committee voted unanimously to grant planning permission.
