A young emu from Caerphilly has captured hearts and imaginations across the UK as his owners look to find him a partner.
Last week, viewers of ITV’s This Morning met Rhi Evans, an emu owner searching for a husband for her beloved bird, EJ.
Watching the show that day was Katherine Watkins, owner of the Meadows Wildlife Park in Groeswen, near Caerphilly – who instantly thought of her 20-month-old emu, Baby Neil.
Katherine contacted the This Morning team to introduce them to Neil, who days later appeared on the show himself.
On Monday November 17, a film crew descended on the Meadows, broadcasting live to millions across the country.
Presenters Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley met Neil via live feed and chatted with Katherine, as well as park manager Megan Smith and keeper Ffion Rees.
The trio spoke of how Neil was the only one of 11 eggs to hatch in March last year to mum Gwen and dad Gavin – all named after characters from Gavin and Stacey – and how his playful nature has endeared him to followers on social media.
Katherine also discussed why Neil could be the perfect match for EJ: “Neil has the loveliest temperament.
“He’s docile, funny, and full of character — and of course he has the most fantastic fluffy hair. We think he and EJ could make a wonderful pair.”
However, the pair will not be able to meet just yet due to bird flu restrictions, but Katherine is hoping a meeting can happen next year.
