Two Newport schools could strengthen their ties later this year by entering into a federation agreement.

The city council has proposed the deal between Maindee Primary and Newport Nursery School, which already share an executive headteacher and chair of governors.

Federation allows multiple schools to share governance arrangements through a single governing body that will make decisions “in the best interest of all the schools, staff and pupils” involved.

A council report states each school would maintain its own “name, culture and ethos” and be responsible for managing its own budget.

It is hoped the deal will “ensure significant positive outcomes and improved standards for both school communities”.

The report adds Maindee Primary has “a proven track record of providing strong teaching and learning”.

Cllr Deb Davies, the cabinet member for education and council’s deputy leader, is expected to back the federation proposal later this month.

That will kick-start the federation process, beginning with a six-week consultation period for members of the school communities to have their say.

If the federation is eventually approved, the deal is expected to come into effect from September, in line with the start of the next academic year.
