Caerphilly’s Member of Parliament has lodged an objection to controversial plans for a McDonalds in Maesycwmmer.

The global fast food chain wants to open a new drive-thru at land currently used as a car dealership, off the A472.

But, in a letter to Caerphilly County Borough Council’s planning department, Labour MP Chris Evans has highlighted concerns raised by residents regarding the development.

He previously wrote to McDonalds outlining his concerns in November 2025, during the pre-application consultation stage.

Mr Evans said he is objecting because “unfortunately the harms it may cause will significantly outweigh any proposed economic benefits”.

He continued: “Many people in the community have been clear that they have serious and reasonable concerns about this, and I agree with them. This is already a traffic bottleneck and it simply won’t be safe for the road to take more.

“There will also be noise, light and litter pollution from the proposed restaurant.”

He added: “I would encourage anyone who has not yet taken part in the consultation to read the planning documents on the Caerphilly County Borough Council website, and submit their comments.”

The planning application (Reference: 25/0888/FULL) is currently out for public consultation until Thursday February 26.

McDonalds already has restaurants in Blackwood, Newbridge, Caerphilly, and one near Pontymister. It has said the new site would create 135 part-time and full-time jobs and will generate between £50,000 and £60,000 in business rates.

The planned McDonald’s would have a total of 40 car parking spaces, and include two accessible bays, four electric vehicle charging points, as well as four motorcycle parking spaces and three cycle spaces.
