Cardiff Canucks ice hockey team “can go all the way” this season, according to head coach Trevor Hendrikx.

The Canadian former NHL pro, who now lives in Caerphilly, reflected on his side’s excellent season – with the team securing a place in the National Ice Hockey Division Two playoffs taking place late March. 

“It’s what we play for every season, and we’ve now done it two years in a row. I have high expectations and believe we can go all the way.  

“Nobody expected us to do it last season, and winning our first game was super exciting for everyone.” 

He explained that the Canucks are far better equipped this year compared to last season. 

“Last year was a baptism of fire, we were just learning everything,” Hendrikx said.  

“The players have developed a lot over the past year and shown massive improvements. I think we’re much better prepared this year, and we’re hungrier and more excited for the challenge.

“Everyone is a year older too, and for the younger players that means one more year of experience.” 

Hendrikx also expressed how grateful he is for the support from Caerphilly, where he now lives. 

“The support we’ve had from day one has been awesome. We’ve built a real fan base, and a big portion of it is Caerphilly-based, which is fantastic.” 

The Canadian also praised how quickly the fanbase continues to grow: “This has been shown in our increasing numbers and attendance figures.  

“For a lot of people who don’t usually watch ice hockey, it gives them a family night out. It’s really cool to see the whole thing growing, and it just keeps growing every time we step on the ice.” 

The Canucks have enjoyed a brilliant season, and Hendrikx was full of praise for his players, particularly highlighting the importance of forward Steve Osman. 

“They’ve all had their moments, but he (Osman) is a player who has been around for many years and scored at many different levels. His leadership and experience are super helpful for our younger players, giving them first-hand expertise.” 

He also praised the Caerphilly-based players, including standout performer Sam Bryant.  

“Sam has been great. He’s one of our top energy players and someone you just can’t replace. 

“He’s also a great example for the younger guys when it comes to hard work and dedication,” he added.  

The 40-year-old also highlighted the progress of Caerphilly’s junior players, Jayden Ford and Harvey Rose. 

“Both of them have come on immensely. They were great last year, but now, with a season under their belt, they’ve been superb,” Hendrikx proudly mentioned.  

“Jayden has been playing extremely well, while Harvey has recently come back from injury and has been very strong. It’s so nice watching them blossom into great young hockey players.” 

Hendrikx added that he enjoys the mix of ages within the squad and how well the players bond. 

“It’s a really interesting dynamic. Sometimes I struggle to find common ground on things to talk about, but it’s a testament to both the older and younger players that they get on so well, both on and off the ice. 

“They all have that ‘never give up’ attitude, and for me as the coach, that is great to see.”
