A by-election could be held in the Rogerstone North seat

A by-election could be called in Rogerstone following the resignation of a Newport city councillor.

Chris Reeks, who represented the Rogerstone North ward from May 2022, stepped down on Monday March 16 for personal reasons.

The council is currently advertising the ward vacancy, and if two or more candidates come forward, a by-election will take place.

To call an election, a request must be made in writing to the council’s returning officer Beverly Owen, at Civic Centre, Newport, NP20 4UR.

Cllr Reeks, a Conservative, said it was “with deep regret that I have made the difficult decision to resign my seat”.

“This has not been an easy decision to make, but I am doing so for personal and family reasons,” he added.

Cllr Matthew Evans, who leads the Conservative group in the council chamber, said of Cllr Reeks: “We are very sad to see him go. I know he has worked extremely hard for his constituents, but family must come first.”
