NEWPORT: Thumbs up for new tyre business that could create 60 jobs

A tyre distribution company will create around 60 jobs when it takes on a warehouse in Newport.

City councillors have approved proposals to refurbish an existing site off Meadows Road, where Oak Tyres UK Limited is planning to expand into Wales.

The applicant’s agent Conor Vallely, of CV Planning, said the business is focused on supplying tyres to trade customers and employs more than 1,000 people nationwide.

He told the city council’s planning committee the new “long-term” venture is worth £10 million and “represents a significant economic boost for Newport”.

New jobs “will be across a range of roles from new fleet drivers through to warehouse operatives, middle- and senior fleet management, and senior leadership positions”.

Talks continuing over future of city’s historic Westgate Hotel

Case officer Geraint Roberts asked the committee to consider the proposals for “a big building on a big plot”, which is already approved for warehouse use.

The existing unit will be upgraded with new doors, loading bays and security fences, he explained.

Mr Roberts said environmental agency Natural Resources Wales had raised some concerns about water runoff from the site, which is close to the Gwent Levels protected area.

But he said the use of the land is “as existing” and the redevelopment would not mean any “worsening of the current situation”.

The committee voted unanimously to approve the proposals, subject to several conditions including that an environmental management plan must be followed during the construction phase.
