Ten weeks of work to prevent surface flooding on Rhymney High Street gets underway today, Monday August 17.

Rhymney is currently in the top 5% of Welsh communities most at risk from surface water flooding. The new scheme will replace outdated infrastructure with modern drainage capable of handling severe storms.

Contractor Alun Griffiths Ltd is carrying out the work on behalf of Caerphilly County Borough Council.

No full road closures are planned during the ten-week project, but pavements will be relaid, leading to temporary pedestrian diversions.

The project forms part of the council’s Local Flood Risk Management Strategy and is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Council leader Jamie Pritchard said: “Residents and businesses in Rhymney will no doubt welcome the start of these much-needed works to improve drainage and prevent flooding along the High Street in future.

“We recognise the disruption and damage that flooding can cause and this scheme demonstrates our commitment to delivering key strategic improvements across the whole county borough.”
