The 225-year-old Rhymney House Hotel is going up for auction with a guide price of £215,000

A historic Grade II listed Rhymney hotel originally built for a 19th-century ironworks manager is going up for auction with a guide price of £215,000.

The Rhymney House Hotel, located at Rhymney Bridge near the border with Tredegar, dates back to 1801. It was constructed for the manager of the Rhymney Iron Company on land leased from the Duke of Beaufort.

Over its 225-year history, the property was long occupied by the local Maddox family. It later operated as a hospitality venue under several names, including Ffynnon Glas, Cristals, and the Three Counties Club, before becoming the Rhymney House Hotel.

Cadw records show the building was listed due to its prominent position on the site of the earliest ironworks in Rhymney and its strong historical connections to the town’s industrial past.

The hotel features nine to ten en-suite bedrooms, a dining room, two bars, a commercial kitchen, a function room, and a large rotunda conservatory, along with extensive gardens and parking.

James Hollingsworth, of Paul Fosh Auctions, said the site offers an opportunity for a buyer to continue running the hospitality business or explore residential development.

He said: “Subject to the necessary planning enquiries, consents and applications, there may be potential to convert the property back into a substantial residential dwelling or potentially create a scheme of self-contained apartments.”

The property is listed with Paul Fosh Auctions. Bidding starts online at 12pm on Tuesday September 1 and ends at 12pm on Thursday September 3.
