Caerphilly politicians oppose police station closure plans

Gwent PoliceThe leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council has written to the Chief Constable of Gwent Police in opposition to plans to close some police stations and replace them with mobile units.

Councillor Lindsay Whittle has said he is concerned at plans to close a number of small stations and replace them with mobile stations.

Plaid Cymru claims it has seen an online list in police authority papers of stations in the area which could close.

It has been reported stations in Caerphilly town, Fochriw, Nelson, Abertridwr and Lansbury Park are under threat.

Cllr Whittle said: “We cannot allow this to happen.

“People need to feel secure in their communities and closing stations will not help that. It is the elderly and vulnerable who will be affected most.”

Gwent Police has said the plans are only in the early stages and are still being considered.

The force has insisted that no police services would be lost and that no station would be closed unless a local alternative was put in place.

In a statement, it said: “In order to achieve this, one option currently being considered is the reprovision of small police outstations

“This means we are in the process of carrying out work to assess how effective the use of mobile police stations or one stop-shops, run in partnership with local authorities, would be as an alternative.

“No decisions have yet been made on how this will be progressed.

“Residents should be reassured that our commitment to protect, reduce crime and increase public confidence remains at the heart of everything we do and the decisions we make.”

Wayne David, the Labour MP for Caerphilly, has stated that he will fight any plans to close police stations in his constituency.

Mr David said he has been assured by Gwent Police that no decisions on closures have been made yet.

He said: “It is vital that the public have the constant reassurance that only a police station can provide.

“Over the past few years we have had the welcome move towards neighbourhood policing.

“Police stations, at the heart of the community, are a vital part of that positive approach to more local policing.”

Mr David has also spoken with Jeff Cuthbert AM, who also strongly opposes any police station closures.
