Rhymney pupils revel in rugby tournament

Sport | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:56, Thursday July 28th, 2011.

More than 80 pupils from the Upper Rhymney Valley have taken part in a tag rugby tournament organised by Sport Caerphilly and Ysgol Rygbi.

The event, organised as part of National School Sport week, saw some fantastic skills on display and the tournament was huge success, with pupils leaving the event with prizes including medals and t-shirts.

Ysgol Rygbi is funded by local businessman and rugby enthusiast Wayne Pugh of Wasp Electricals. The scheme promotes fun after-school sessions aimed at improving the basic skills needed for the game. As a result, local clubs should benefit from increased participation, club membership and skill development.

Since its launch, there has been a dramatic rise in participation rates, with more pupils continuing to play the sport when they reach comprehensive school. The scheme is now in its third year with Sport Caerphilly Community Coaches delivering expert after-school Rugby sessions.

Mr Pugh said: “It is fantastic to see the rugby development of both boys and girls improving year on year as well as seeing everyone having fun. I would like to thank the volunteers who gave their time to referee and assist Sport Caerphilly staff in the running of the day. The community spirit was there for all to see and long may this continue. See you all next year.”

Cllr Phil Bevan, cabinet member for education, leisure and lifelong learning said: “This excellent scheme is another means of encouraging participation in physical activity among our young people where they can gain team skills and social interaction with others.”
