More than 100 children and youngsters enjoyed a bright and sunny community play day in Gilfach near Bargoed.

The Your Way Project, based in Bargoed YMCA held its third Play Day on Wednesday August 3 on the Capel Field in Gilfach, Bargoed.

The volunteer-run project helps youngsters affected by family drink and drug problems.

Project manager Lorraine Davies said: “All ages were welcome and we had various activities from face painting, sports, Rugby Skills with ex-Blues and international player Duane Goodfield, football skills, art, craft and graffiti. We also had rides through the country park, dressing up with the police, water stocks and the fire brigade.

“The project’s been running for the last four years and it works with children and young people who have someone close to them who are misusing drink, drugs or prescription drugs. It might be a parent or a brother or sister.

“We run a weekly peer support group based around play and we work with children from the age of four upwards with no upper age limit.

“The whole point of it is for them to understand that whatever is happening at home, it isn’t their fault.”

The day was enjoyed by families from Philipstown, Blackwood, Caerphilly, Pengam, Llanbradach, Britannia, Deri, Margam, Cwmfelinfach, Brithdir, Gilfach and Bargoed.
