Welsh Water to carry out work to stop floods in Blackwood

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:00, Thursday August 18th, 2011.

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water is spending £350,000 on a scheme to stop flooding in Grove Park area of Blackwood.

The not-for-profit utility company will begin work on Monday August 22 to increase capacity on local drains for them to cope with heavy rain.

The company has said that several properties in the area have flooded during heavy rainfall in the past, but that the work should stop this.

The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of November, will involve the construction and modification of new and existing manholes and associated pipework in the highway. Some work will also be carried out on local playing fields.

For the scheme to be carried out safely, it has been agreed with the local highways authority that temporary traffic lights will be situated on Caldicot Close for the duration of the scheme.

For health and safety reasons it will also be necessary to close the public footpath into the playing fields from August 22 for four weeks.

Martin Kilroy, Welsh Water’s project manager, said: “We realise the distress internal wastewater flooding can cause and are committed to tackling it. Our project in Blackwood reflects this and our goal to provide customers with a first class service.”
