Ticket offices at Ystrad Mynach and Bargoed train stations have been recommended for closure by a UK Government report into cost-savings for the rail industry.
The two station offices are among 23 across Wales that could face the axe if the findings of the report by Sir Roy McNulty are implemented by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond.
The report recommends the replacement of ticket offices with machines.
Publishing the full list of planned closures, Gerry Doherty, leader of the TSSA, called on the Transport Secretary to reject the cutbacks.
He said: “This is a double whammy for millions of passengers. Last month they were told that fares will rise by 25% over the next three years.
“And they are now set to lose one in four ticket offices. Not only are unstaffed stations less secure, tickets bought from machines are usually more expensive.
“Philip Hammond should come to the Dispatch Box in the next few days and give a clear undertaking that he is going to ditch these draconian cuts in services to passengers.”
Under current laws, train companies have to seek permission from the Department for Transport before any ticket office closure.
Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert said he was very concerned by the recommendations in the report.
He said:”Many passengers use the ticket offices at Bargoed and Ystrad Mynach stations in my constituency and I am worried about any effects that potential closures could have. People often prefer to discuss their travel needs with an Official rather than rely on a ticket machine.
“I will be monitoring this situation carefully and working with my colleague Wayne David MP in making the strongest possible representations to the UK Coalition Government, telling them that we are deeply opposed to potential closures.
“In May I was re-elected on a platform of ‘standing up for Wales’ and we will be doing just that.”
