Bedwas pub celebrates European ruling on Sky TV and football rights

The Fly pub in Bedwas has welcomed the decision by the European Court of Justice which allows the screening of Premiership football games using a foreign TV decoder.

The ruling, after a case fought by Portsmouth landlady Karen Murphy, means that commercial premises are within their rights to buy satellite TV showing Premiership football from companies other than Sky.

Sky for pubs can cost up to £12,000 a year. In contrast, other suppliers can offer the same football package for just over £2,000.

The system used by Ms Murphy, which she had been fined £8,000 for using, had already been installed at the Fly. If the ruling went against Ms Murphy then the Fly’s owner Clayton Jones could have faced a similar fine.

He said: “This has come as a great relief.

“Yes we took the risk that this would be overturned at the European Court, however as we are all signed up to the European Union it appeared common sense after reading the counsel opinion given by suppliers Veturi.com.”

The staff and customers are having a free champagne celebration when the first Premier games are shown at 3pm on October 15 and the pub has said it will provide free transport for parties to watch the games for of up to six travelling customers within the Caerphilly town area.
