Almost forty youngsters from across Caerphilly County Borough have been selected to take part in a ‘Coaches of the Future’ programme by the council.
Officers from the council’s sports development team will provide support to the young coaches throughout the programme, which will culminate in them achieving a Level 2 award in Community Sports Leadership.
The young coaches and their parents were invited to a special event to officially launch the programme recently.
Cllr Phil Bevan, cabinet member for education, leisure and lifelong learning said: “This nationally recognised qualification can really help act as a stepping stone into employment in the sports and leisure industry, and therefore I’m delighted that we have almost 40 youngsters signed up to take part in the programme this year.”
As part of the programme, the coaches will complete 30 hours of tutor delivery, qualify as a first aider, and gain a qualification in Safeguarding and Protecting.
Once qualified, the young coaches will be deployed into primary and secondary schools as well as community settings, where they will be given the opportunity to continue into their second year and progress to the Higher Sports Leader Award (HSLA) Level 3 course.
