Coleg Gwent students have been getting their hands dirty helping with a restoration project.

The group of independent living skills (ILS) students are taking part in the Fourteen Locks Education through Restoration Project, a partnership between Newport City Council and The Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust (MBACT) to restore two pairs of locks on the Cefn Flight of Fourteen Locks.

As part of the restoration project, students from the Crosskeys campus recently spent the day clearing litter with Keep Wales Tidy on the Crumlin Arm of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canals.

Students learnt about the history of the canal which provided access for transporting coal, iron and limestone during the 19th century.

Tutor Victoria English said: “Working on this project has taught students about the importance looking after their local environment, the value of local communities and the fascinating history of the locks. Students have been inspired and can’t wait to continue their work with the project.”

Over the next few months students are planning to continue the clean up of the locks and will also be getting involved in a series of workshops run by the project to make an animated film.
