Caerphilly pupils scoop prestigious film award

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:25, Tuesday October 25th, 2011.

A group of Caerphilly county borough youngsters are celebrating, after the film they produced and directed won awards at a prestigious awards ceremony recently.

The film ‘My Dead Love’ fought off tough competition to win the accolade of ‘Best Arts Direction’ and joint first place in the ‘Audience Award for Best Film’ category at the First Films Awards ceremony.

The production involved pupils from Blackwood, Pontllanfraith, Risca and Oakdale Comprehensive Schools, and forms part of Caerphilly county borough’s contribution to the 2012 Cultural Olympiad – the Awen Project.

Awen Project Coordinator, Louise Ralph said: “The young people should feel so proud of these awards, which recognise all the long hours and effort that they put into creating a first class, high quality piece of work.”

The First Films Awards recognise the creativity and hard work of young film makers in Newport and the surrounding areas, and was judged by some of the top film makers in Wales.

The project was managed by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Arts Development Service and delivered by Zoom Cymru.

Arts Development hope to start on ongoing project for Caerphilly county borough youngsters – Ffilm Awen Film will hold regular film education workshops, and will also provide the chance to attend film workshops and technical and creative sessions.
