Community safety wardens attended more than 4,500 antisocial behaviour hotspots in Caerphilly County Borough, figures released by the council show.
In the year 2008/09 Caerphilly County Borough Council’s team of safety wardens, which equates to a team of ten full-time wardens, spent 7,700 hours patrolling 4,659 hotspots.
They reported 267 untaxed cars to the Driving Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and referred 1,042 items to police that were on view in cars helping to prevent thefts.
During the same period, the council’s team of CCTV operators monitored 1,705 situations, of which 519 required police action.
Its mobile CCTV units were deployed on 352 times.
Councillor Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment, said: “These commendable figures clearly illustrate the sheer amount of work that is being undertaken throughout the Caerphilly County Borough to reduce levels of crime, disorder and antisocial behaviour and to build community confidence levels.
“The Safer Caerphilly Community Safety Partnership is at the forefront of this work, which in addition to Caerphilly County Borough Council is also comprised of agencies including Gwent Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Caerphilly teaching Local Health Board.
“We will continue to work with our partners to ensure that this excellent work carries on for many years to come to ensure that Caerphilly County Borough remains a very safe and pleasant place to live, work and visit.”
