School pupils have been helping to spread some festive cheer by putting together dozens of food hampers for local 16 to 20-year-olds who have recently left care.

As part of Operation Santa, a special council-organised appeal which aims to support over 650 children and young people in the area, pupils from Blackwood and Heolddu Comprehensive Schools have produced festive food hampers for young people too old to receive toys as part of the appeal.

A spokesman for Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “A big, big thank you to everyone who got involved.

“There’s still time to get involved in Operation Santa and pledge to buy a gift for a local child. These children are not helped by any other appeal, and have been nominated by social workers who work with families across the county borough.

“Operation Santa is also pleased once again this year to be helping families who are working with Llamau, Action for Children, Home Start and Gofal Cymru.”

People can pledge a gift by calling 01443 866 577 or emailing operationsanta@caerphilly.gov.uk

The gifts can then be delivered to one of the collection centres situated across the county borough by Tuesday December 13.

Collection Centres:

  • Barclays Bank, Ystrad Mynach
  • Customer First, Blackwood
  • Customer First, Pontlottyn
  • Harper and Wallis Estate Agent, Hanbury Road, Bargoed
  • Lloyds TSB Bank, Rhymney
  • Risca Family Centre, Risca
