Young film-makers from across Caerphilly County Borough have been recognised for their skills at a national awards ceremony.

At the media4schools awards, held in Cardiff last month, Ysgol Rhiw Syr Dafydd in Oakdale scooped the Best Camera Work Primary award for their film The Great Eggscape, which looked at the attempts by eggs to escape the clutches of an ‘evil’ school cook.

Satirical film The Funeral, by Lewis School, Pengam, won Best Animated Film in the secondary competition, and The Exchange by Oakdale Comprehensive School took the Best Edited Film.

The eighth annual media4schools Awards was held at Cineworld in Cardiff on November 15, and recognised the winners of the competition which attracted 300 entries from across the country.

The awards aim to highlight the hard work and commitment shown by schools and communities across Wales who are involved in film-making, with an opportunity for winners to showcase their talents on the big screen at the event.

The panels of judges was made up of specialists from across the media.

All the winners were presented with their awards by one of the many VIPs at the event and were given prizes including camera equipment, editing software, vouchers to buy equipment and a tour of an animation studio.

Byron Lloyd, director of media4schools, praised all the entrants for making this year’s awards the best yet.

He said: “The standard of films this year has been extremely high and we thank all schools and community groups for their hard work and enthusiasm.

“There were some amazing film entries on show with a dramatic variation in topics, ranging from animations to sporting films and sci-fi to music videos.

“In 2011 our key aim was to be nationally recognised by public and private sector organisations as a major initiative connecting education and industry through media and to develop vocational opportunities for young people in digital media.”
