Caerphilly football coach wins volunteer award

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:23, Tuesday December 13th, 2011.

A football coach has won a Sport Wales award for his work with Caerphilly Castle Ladies and Girls FC

Stuart Robson picked up the Volunteer of the Year award from Sport Wales at an awards ceremony last month.

When Stuart joined Caerphilly Castle Ladies and Girls FC in 2004 it had a small junior section and a ladies team. Since then he has totally reformed the club and grown membership at a rapid rate. The club now caters for teams at under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, youth and senior age-groups.

As well as helping the under 16s to one of their most successful seasons, he has provided the players with a structure and support mechaniss to enable more than 10 players to achieve positions on the South Wales Girls League (SWGL) development squad. One player has even represented Wales in the home nations competition.

Stuart, who lives on Castle View and is 42, said: “I started coaching with the club about nice years ago.

“As most do I guess I started because my daughter wanted to take up the sport and, after seeing how things were done, felt I had something to offer to benefit the club and the children.

“The best thing is seeing the smiles on the faces of the individuals, win or lose, or when attending club events, meeting VIP’s and receiving awards and recognition. Also putting something back in to a sport that I love so much and actively participated in – and still do but not as energetically!

“I am moving away from the coaching side to focus more on the developing of the club as a whole to ensure the foundations allow us to build and grow further.”

Congratulations Stuart, well deserved accolade. Lets hope 2012 is a superb year and that the European tour can become a reality.
