A-level students throughout Caerphilly County Borough are celebrating their results this morning.
It has been another excellent year for students in the county borough with an overall pass rate of 97.1% (Grades A – E) across all examination boards, matching the Welsh average.
The percentage of A grades, including the new A*, awarded to Caerphilly students has increased to the highest ever level of 19.8%, up from 17.4% in 2009.
These standards have been achieved against the background of a significant rise in the number of entries from 1,226 to 1,354, an increase of over 10%. This is at a time where Wales as a whole saw a 2.9% decrease in entries on last year’s figures.
Councillor Phil Bevan, cabinet member for education and leisure was full of praise for both students and teachers.
He said: “We are extremely pleased with this excellent set of results. Our students have done a great job and are a credit to themselves, their families and their schools. We must of course also congratulate the teachers of Caerphilly County Borough Council, whose dedication and commitment has made these commendable results possible.”
Sandra Aspinall, director of education and leisure said: “These outstanding achievements reflect the authority’s commitment to the Learning Pathways 14 to 19 Agenda, and our desire to provide the most appropriate learning opportunities for all of our young people.
“The significant rise in entries shows that more of our young people are engaging with what Caerphilly schools have to offer. The results our learners have achieved are testimony to their dedication and ability. They also reflect the quality of teaching provided within our schools, and the commitment of our teachers to helping our students achieve their maximum potential.”
