Young Caerphilly firefighters celebrate success

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:37, Thursday December 22nd, 2011.

Youngsters from across Caerphilly County Borough have been celebrating their success in the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service Young Firefighters Scheme.

The Young Firefighters were presented with their Level 2 BTEC Award in a presentation with the Mayor, Cllr Vera Jenkins at Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters, Penallta House recently.

Cllr Vera Jenkins said: “This group of young people should be very proud of all they have achieved in this excellent scheme.”

The Young Firefighter scheme is a two year programme, it is a uniformed cadet scheme run for young people both male and female, aged 14 to 18.

The Young Firefighters use specially adapted equipment in firefighting drills and learn the skills used by firefighters.

The main focus of the scheme is to develop citizenship in young people.

Each of the Young Firefighters have been working towards a BTEC Level 2 Award in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community and parts of it have focused on fire safety in the home, arson, anti-social behaviour and road traffic collisions.
