Baby sign language classes to start in Caerphilly

A new baby sign language class in Caerphilly town is aiming to help parents communicate better with their children.

The new classes, being run by mum-of-two Laura Fergusson, teaches children from the age of six months to use their hands to sign different words.

Laura explained: “Essentially it’s a way of communicating with your baby before they can talk.

“Babies’ control of their hands develops long before their control of their vocal cords and co-ordination of the movement of lips, tongue and teeth to make speech. Baby signing bridges this very wide gap aiding communication, giving them a means to begin to understand everything.”

Inspired by her own experiences with her son and daughter, Laura decided to start teaching classes and has been doing so for the last five years.

Baby signing classes are to begin in Caerphilly

She said: “Outings with my son Alfie became exciting adventures as he pointed out the dogs and squirrels in the park to me, or the aeroplanes and birds in the sky.

“He could even tell me whether he wanted to go on the slide or the swings before he could actually walk to them himself. This precious window on my baby’s world was so rewarding – I loved knowing what it was that really interested him and seeing his delight at my comprehension.”

TinyTalk baby signing classes will be held at Bethel Chapel, 47-53 Nantgarw Road, Caerphilly, from January 9 between 10am and 11am.
