A tattooist has been prosecuted and fined for being unregistered with the council.

Ian Andrew Davies, 29, of Nursery Crescent, Rhymney, appeared before Caerphilly Magistrates’ Court on January 3 in a prosecution by Caerphilly County Borough Council.

By law, all tattooists must be registered with the council.

He admitted two offences under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 of undertaking the practice of tattooing while not being registered and tattooing at a premise not registered with the council.

Davies was ordered to pay a £100 fine for each of the offences, together with £250 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. Tattooing equipment was also seized and destroyed during the investigation.

Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for public protection said: “Our team of officers within our Environmental Health section work tirelessly to investigate such activity in order to protect the health of our residents. I hope this prosecution will act as a deterrent to others.”

The council has warned this is the first in a series of investigations into illegal tattooing in Caerphilly County Borough.
