Caerphilly County Borough Council has announced it is drawing up plans to improve traffic flow and ease congestion along the busy A472 in Maesycwmmer.
The junction at the traffic lights in the heart of the village is renowned for it congestion, especially at morning and afternoon peak times.
The council has said completion of the nearby Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr hospital development and growth in traffic means that vehicle numbers will rise significantly in the future.
Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for transportation and planning said: “The A472 through Maesycwmmer is a key strategic route and at present around 23,000 vehicles pass through the village each day. It is expected that this number will rise to 28,000 by 2025, so it is clear that improvements are needed as a matter of urgency.
“We appreciate that there are some concerns in the local community about the local impacts of the intended works, but we are confident that the engineering solution being proposed will provide long term benefits to users of the A472 highway corridor and address the growing traffic problems in the village.”
A public information day is due to take place in March when residents can go along and find out more about the highway improvements.
Significant highway improvements are being undertaken just down the road in Ystrad Mynach. The major works at the key junction between the A472 and the A469 complement the new hospital development in the area.
The proposed scheme in Maesycwmmer is the next phase in these wider improvement works on the A469 and A472 strategic highway and is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to enhance the highway network across the county borough.
