Swalec cuts gas prices by 4.5%

The owner of energy firm Swalec has announced it is cutting its gas prices by 4.5% because of falling wholesale costs.

SSE, which increased gas prices by 18% last year, said the price cut would take effect on domestic gas bills at the end of March.

Alistair Phillips-Davies, Generation and Supply Director of SSE, said: “The cut in household gas bills shows customers that we will bring down prices when we can and our decision to extend to October our pledge not to increase prices will give our customers some additional certainty about the costs they will face in the course of this new year.

“The introduction of our new fixed price product also gives customers the option to put a ceiling on the price they pay for energy through to 2015.”

The announcement of the cut followed similar moves by British Gas and EDF, who both said they would cut domestic gas prices by 5%.

The reduction of gas prices for Swalec customers equates to £28, according to the company. The firm has around 1 million customers in Wales.
