Caerphilly Council’s school catering service reaches Welsh Government standard

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Tuesday January 17th, 2012.

All 79 primary schools in Caerphilly County Borough have met Welsh Government standards on school meals

Caerphilly County Borough Council has become one of the first authorities to meet the Welsh Government’s Appetite for Life Standards.

All 79 primary schools in Caerphilly County Borough are now ‘Appetite for Life’ compliant.

The standard means that meals are healthy and nutritional.

Cllr Rob Gough said: “Our priority during the school day is to offer our children the best possible lunch. Our two course nutritionally analysed meal fully complies with the Welsh Government Appetite for Life Guidelines.

“We strongly believe that your child deserves the best locally-sourced produce and a friendly service and we offer all of this for just £1.80 per day.

“School provides an ideal opportunity for us as an authority, to convey positive messages about healthy eating and support our young residents throughout their school years in their journey to becoming healthy adults.”

  • More than 1,000 children across the area are missing out on free school meals. If you are in receipt of certain benefits and have registered with the council then you could be missing out on saving up to £500 per year. The council has introduced a quick and easy registration process. To apply or find out more, please call 01443 863093 alternatively visit www.caerphilly.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals
