Coleg Gwent students to visit House of Commons

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Thursday January 19th, 2012.

Coleg Gwent students are heading to London next week to meet the speaker of the House of Commons and take a tour of Parliament after receiving an invitation from the Speaker’s Office.

The group will also visit 10 Downing Street and present a cheque to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Crosskeys Campus independent living skills (ILS) students are heading to Westminster on Wednesday January 25 to meet Speaker John Bercow and to perform their own poem about the environment in Parliament’s state rooms.

“The group are incredibly excited by this amazing opportunity,” said Independent Learning Skills Tutor Victoria English.

“They’re looking forward to seeing all that Parliament does for the country, and cannot wait to recite their poem.

“Last year we visited the Welsh Assembly and performed the poem to Minister for the Environment Jane Davidson, so we’re going a step further this year.”

Later in the day, students will get the inside track on another iconic London landmark, the Prime Minister’s residence 10 Downing Street, where the group have been invited to take part in a tour.

Finishing off a very special visit to the English capital, the students will present a cheque for £450 to Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in memory of ILS staff member Carol Water’s late son Craig James Waters.

Victoria said: “We raised funds for Great Ormond Street in memory of Craig, who was wonderfully looked after there. We’ll also be visiting the chapel and viewing the book of remembrance.”
